Class Picks

As I was looking through Longform, trying to find an essay that interested me enough to discuss in class, I discovered one entitled “Sick” with the only description for it being- “Visiting a lost friend.” I was intrigued. Reading through this essay by writer Amy Butcher I was struck by how the author recounts her experiences with her friend, and balances it with her own thoughts; she would say what was happening in the moment, then follow up with what was happening in her head. The mystery of the events in the essay and her construction as a whole adds to it’s complexity. She takes the first half discussing her relationship with Kevin, and the second half discussing why he’s in the place he is. The nuances of the essay and her timing of revealing certain information ultimately offers a commentary on a much bigger issue, that she creates not by the words she uses, but by when she uses them.
